Tenant experience

Attract great tenants

Getting paid on time tops the list of things that keep landlords up at night. We don't just make rent easier to pay — we reward renters for paying it on time.

On-time renters earn perks like free rent reporting to all three major credit bureaus, the ability to split rent, and — through our partnership with Livable — the flexibility to pay rent on a schedule that fits their paydays.

Best ways to pay rent online

Ranked from best to worst

Several factors matter when deciding how to collect rent. Here are the five most common methods — hint: we think PayRent is one of the good ones.

01

Online rent collection

RECOMMENDED

Convenience, safety and security with no memberships or monthly fees. Collect for free or cover the ACH fees for your tenants. Renters pay by card or bank transfer from anywhere, while you keep personal details private and refuse partial payments.

02

Zelle

Bank-to-bank, fast and free — with limits. Not every institution supports it, transfer caps are often lower than rent (leaving you with partial payments), and you must share personal details to get paid. Misdirected funds can't be recovered.

03

Peer-to-peer apps

Venmo, PayPal and CashApp are great for splitting a dinner bill, less so for business. Landlords face additional business fees with no way to pass them to tenants, and remain exposed to partial payments.

04

Checks

Popular, but a relic. Tenants have to source a checkbook, write it out and deliver it by mail, dropbox or in person — then you endorse and deposit it. All of which is costly in the currency that matters most: your time.

05

Cash

Often preferred, rarely practical. Cash is easily lost or stolen, hard to track and inconvenient — you'll need to meet your tenant, count the rent and issue a receipt every single month.

The payment controls are the whole reason I switched. Partial payments used to be my biggest headache — now they simply aren't possible.

I own two duplexes, so enterprise software was never going to fit. No unit minimum and no hidden fees made this an easy decision.

Paying rent online, answered

What does ACH stand for?

ACH stands for Automated Clearing House — the network that moves electronic payments between U.S. banks. It's what powers direct deposit and automatic bill payments.

What are the pros and cons of accepting credit cards for rent?

Cards give renters another way to pay electronically. The trade-offs are processing fees, typically 2.5–5%, and the chance a renter disputes a charge and you have to show it was legitimate. On PayRent, card fees are the tenant's responsibility — never the landlord's.

Is my banking information safe when using an online rent collection service?

Reputable platforms follow banking security standards, including encryption and protection of every user's financial data. For safeguarding bank information, online rent collection is on par with your bank.

Can I collect rent online without giving my personal information to my tenant?

Yes. With PayRent and similar platforms, your data stays private — renters can pay without ever seeing your name, address or bank account details.

Can I collect rent using Zelle?

You can, and it's usually free, but there are catches: many banks still don't offer Zelle, and daily transfer limits are often lower than a month's rent, which leaves you accepting partial payments.

Can I use Venmo to collect rent?

Venmo is designed for payments between individuals. Their own guidelines advise against using it to collect or pay rent.
