Connect PayRent to Your AI Assistant

PayRent can connect to the AI assistant you already use, like Claude, so it can check on your rental portfolio and, when you say so, take action for you. Once connected, you can ask your assistant things like "who's past due this month" or "add a new unit at 123 Oak Street" the same way you'd ask a property manager. Your assistant reads your PayRent data through a secure, PayRent-controlled connection: it only sees what your plan allows, and anything that changes your account waits for your explicit go-ahead before it happens. This page covers what your assistant can see, what it can do, and how the connection protects you. Developers and AI agents looking for technical setup details should go straight to the install reference at the bottom.

What can my AI assistant see in PayRent?

Once connected, your assistant can look up:

  • Your portfolio at a glance — occupancy, unit counts, and financial summaries, plus the details of your current PayRent plan and what it includes.

  • Your properties — a list of your buildings and units, including which are occupied or vacant.

  • Your renters and their payments — your renter roster and balances, payment history across your whole portfolio or for one renter, and the full charge-and-credit ledger for any renter's account. For a payment that needs a closer look, it can also pull the current status directly from the payment processor.

  • Your settlements and payouts — your payout history, and the full breakdown of any individual settlement, down to the transaction level.

  • PayRent's help center — so it can answer how-to questions the same way our support site would.

Everything your assistant reads is scoped to your account only. It cannot see another landlord's properties, renters, or payments under any circumstances.

What can my AI assistant do on my behalf?

This is the part that matters most, so here it is plainly: some actions happen right away when you ask, and some always stop and wait for you to say yes first, every single time, no exceptions.

Happens right away, when you ask:

  • Inviting a new renter to a unit, or resending an invite

  • Adding a new building or unit to your portfolio

  • Posting a charge, credit, or fee to a renter's account

  • Resetting a renter's balance to zero

Always asks you to confirm first:

  • Changing details on an existing unit or building

  • Deleting a unit, a building, or a billing line item

  • Canceling a pending renter invite

  • Sending an email to a renter — your assistant will show you the exact subject line and message it plans to send and wait for your explicit approval before it sends anything

For anything in the second group, your assistant is required to describe the specific change first (the property, the amount, the exact email text, whatever it is) and get a clear yes from you before it happens. It cannot skip that step, and it cannot treat a vague "sure" on something else as approval for a different action.

What can't my AI assistant do?

Your AI assistant cannot process a refund or move money on your behalf through this connection, on purpose. Refunds still go through the PayRent app directly, where you control them the same way you always have. This connection is for information and account management, not payment processing.

How do I connect my AI assistant to PayRent?

Connecting takes a few steps, all of which happen on PayRent's side, not inside your assistant's chat window:

  1. In your AI assistant's settings, add PayRent as a custom connector using PayRent's MCP server address (in Claude, look for Customize, then Connectors, then Add custom connector).

  2. You'll be sent to a PayRent login page and sign in the same way you always do.

  3. PayRent shows you exactly what's being requested — what your assistant can read, and whether it's asking for permission to make changes too — before anything is granted.

  4. Approve, and you're connected. You can revisit or revoke this at any time.

This feature is available on select PayRent plans. If you don't see the option to connect, check your plan under Settings, or reach out to your PayRent account team to ask about availability.

Is connecting my AI assistant secure?

Yes. This connection uses OAuth 2.1, the same modern authorization standard used by major platforms for third-party app access, plus an added layer (PKCE) that closes off a known class of interception attacks. A few things worth knowing:

  • You log in on PayRent, not in your assistant. Your PayRent password is never shared with, or visible to, your AI assistant.

  • You see and approve the request before it's granted, every time you connect a new assistant.

  • Your data stays yours. Every request is checked against your account specifically; there is no way for the connection to expose another landlord's information.

  • You're always in control. You can revoke access at any time, and destructive or irreversible actions always wait for your explicit confirmation in the moment, not just your original approval to connect.

This is the same protection-first thinking behind PayRent's RentDefense tools, applied to how your AI assistant reaches your account: PayRent decides what's exposed, you decide what happens, nothing moves without a clear trail back to your approval.

Frequently asked questions

What is PayRent's MCP connection?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants like Claude connect securely to outside services. PayRent's MCP connection lets your AI assistant read your portfolio data and, with your confirmation, take certain actions in PayRent, without you ever sharing your PayRent login with the assistant itself.

Which AI assistants can connect to PayRent?

Any assistant that supports the Model Context Protocol can connect, including Claude. Support varies by assistant, so check your assistant's own settings for a PayRent or custom connector option.

Will my AI assistant ever change my account without asking me?

No. Actions that update or delete something, or that send an email to a renter, always require your explicit confirmation of that specific action before they happen. Only a small set of straightforward, easily reversible actions, like inviting a renter or adding a new unit, happen without a separate confirmation step.

Can my AI assistant issue a refund or move money?

No. Refund and payment-processing actions are intentionally excluded from this connection. Refunds are handled directly in the PayRent app.

Do I need a specific PayRent plan to use this?

This feature is available on select PayRent plans. If you don't see it in your account settings, contact your PayRent account team to ask about availability for your plan.

How do I disconnect my AI assistant from PayRent?

You can disconnect at any time from your assistant's own connector settings, or from your PayRent account settings, which immediately revokes the assistant's access to your data.
